Best & Worst June 2018 Comic Book Releases

The image which represents my feelings after seeing the solicitations for June. Pretty fluid. But how awesome will Justice League be by Scott Snyder! Sadly, All-Star got the better end of the stick and got to cover that along with Man of Steel, Immortal Hulk, and Sentry. Damn you! So yes, this is technically a part 3 of the Solicitations coverage for June. Read PART 1 and then PART 2 if you’re interested in seeing the other solicits!

Robert Venditti on Hawkman? Wasn’t it supposed to be Jeff Lemire? Jeez! A couple months ago a person tried being hyped for a Hawkman series, but instead, we got the guy who writes Green Lantern with no characterization and only focuses on the spectacle. I’m out. And Hitch’s art is nothing to boast about either. Not a fan of it at all. It will be part of DC’s New Justice initiative where there will be a big focus on the Justice League with three different team titles. Seems all isn’t doomed. Since this solo is part of a bigger picture, in line with Snyder’s vision, I guess it will score it a bit higher on my anticipation rank than originally. Let’s just hope this Snyder Justice League is better than the movie Snyder one.

I learned literally nothing from this description other than Tony Stark is Iron Man which I knew since I was a kid. This description can honestly be used to any Iron Man comic if we were to change the names of the creatives. I am genuinely looking forward to what Dan Slott has to bring. He and Stark both have that douchey personality which must mean something, amirite? Fine! Who am I kidding! The cover looks like the movie version but stripped away from his more positive qualities. Still really looking forward to it though. Maybe Tony will finally become an amazing comic character that can match the film one.

But as the casualties pile up and the losses mount on both sides, none of them will be ready to confront the full fury of raw power personified as X-O Manowar makes his long-awaited return after a year of self-imposed exile among the stars…and delivers a single concussive strike that will send shockwaves across the whole of the Valiant Universe!

Wow! I’m beginning to be worried because it sounds like a lot is going to go down. A bit too much. How will they fit all this into one issue? But then again looking at the cover I start to feel bad for doubting it. I mean look at it! Ninjak is slaughtering Bloodshot! Hopefully, the action can shift from one to the other smoothly. Seeing the creative talent involved really means a lot to me and makes me wish more people would pick it up. Good news, I have a feeling this will be Valiant’s best-selling event outperforming The Book of Death.

Issue #1:  Now this is what I call a proper issue 1 solicitations! The Thor is finally back with a golden hand, only this time around there are more than one hammers? Don’t we remember what happened last when there were more than one? We got like 15 other Thors. But seriously, you better not do what DC Rebirth did to Flash and give everyone his powers. Issue 2: THORI! THORI! THORI! The cover looks fantastic!

RANT TIME (1 of 2)

Coming out this month is Marvel’s disgusting practice of milking as much out of your beloved character until no sanity is left. There is Hunt for Wolverine: Adamantium Agenda, Hunt for Wolverine: Claws of a Killer, Hunt for Wolverine: Mystery in Madripoor and Hunt for Wolverine: Weapon Lost. All of these, by the way, is a 4 issue limited series costing $4 per issue. So to get the entire full story you must spend $64. Wow, Marvel congratulations. You outdid yourself. You are kings at pushing away your in-built audience.

IGN made a strong video pertaining this topic which I suggest you go and watch HERE. The comment that you read above from the video really put things in perspective even more.

Meet Eel O’Brian: a petty thug, thief and con artist who runs a strip club. Hey, he’s also dead, at least according to the gang that tossed him out like last week’s garbage. Literally. Don’t worry, though—he bounced back from all that, and now he’s trying to make a new life for himself, but the effort is stretching him pretty thin. How can he get revenge on his old boss, keep a street kid out of trouble, make a dancer fall in love with him and stop a mysterious society from taking over the world? Eel has no idea!

A Plastic Man series…..WAHOOO!!! Written by Gail Simone…Oh. The author of the most overrated run in the past decade, Batgirl. Say what you want about Gail Simone, talk about her personality, talk about her appearance, I don’t care. What I do care about though is the writing which she has showcased no signs of. I took this one away from All-Star, but then knowing Simone will write made me wanna give it back (but because I respect him so much and didn’t wanna seem unthankful I kept it).

Skottie Young and Nic Klein bring you the craziest tales of the Regeneratin’ Degenerate yet! It’s been a while since Deadpool’s had to merc to make ends meet, but things are tough all over. While Deadpool tries to get his humble mercenary-for-hire business back off the ground, a catastrophic threat so unfathomably huge, so mind-breakingly cataclysmic it defies description, is heading toward Earth, and there’s only ONE PERSON WHO CAN STOP IT!!! Oh no, wait…it’s not Wade, is it? Oh, %$@#. It’s Wade.

Surprised Gbros didn’t want this one given he is an X-Men character. Oh well. I picked him up. The only reason anyone should be excited is for Skottie Young. I honestly thought the man was kidnapped or something because his activity has been so radio dead silent lately. Nic Klein’s work is also beautiful so the team has me for the first time interested in reading anything Deadpool for the past 3 years or so.

SHADOWMAN (2018) #4

For the first time, Jack Boniface is about to discover the long-hidden history of the supernatural power that became his birthright… Unmoored in time and space, the loa is about to reveal its untold dimensions…and now, the last defender of the wall between our realm and the Deadside is falling backwards through the astral void, finding himself face to face with his forebears across the centuries – from the paranoia-addled alleyways of 1940s New York to the fire-scorched plantations of the Civil War…all the way back to the primeval height of the African savannah in 40,000 B.C.!

Another Valiant comic! Fun fact Shadowman #1 comes out this month so pick it up and tell me whether you like it. Written by the man who worked on Green Arrow: Year One, Shadowman #4 seems it will try to introduce and go more in-depth into the loa which I’m really glad because the character seemed like a missed potential. It wasn’t until Ninjak’s standalone when the design was completely reimagined and pushed more emphasis on Shadowman’s mystical powers and their potential. I think this new jumping on point will along the way establish new rules to the loa which will truly define the character.

After being used by Evil Steve Rogers during “Secret Empire,” Frank Castle is out for revenge. First on Frank’s big targets list: Baron Zemo. But Frank’s not the only one who hasn’t shaken off the specter of Hydra Nation, and Zemo may have a few surprises of his own…

Yes! Firstly, Matthew Rosenberg from 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank followed by the cover by Valiant’s Clayton Crain (Big 2 finally noticing the talent Valiant promotes) and to top it all off it’s Frank vs. Hydra. Basically an apology letter to what Marvel did to the poor guy in Secret Empire. I’m starting to feel better.

RANT TIME (2 of 2)

Are you kidding me? While Hunt for Wolverine is littering Marvel, DC has found their own cow milk, the Batman: The Wedding. Pardon me! Batman: Prelude to the Wedding. That’s right, we will first milk the prelude, then the actual story you care for is going to be 10 parts long while the epilogue will be divided into 3 parts (kidding about the issue number of main story and epilogue). This month alone we have Batman: Prelude to the Wedding – Robin vs. Ra’s al Ghul, Batman: Prelude to the Wedding – Nightwing vs. Hush, Batman: Prelude to the Wedding – Batgirl vs. the Riddler, Batman: Prelude to the Wedding – Red Hood vs. Anarky, Batman: Prelude to the Wedding – Harley Quinn vs. Joker.

This adds up to $20 to Marvel’s $16 for June alone, but we don’t know how much more will we milk from this event as opposed to Marvel. This is beyond ridiculous! People will not buy all of this. One positive coming out is that DC is committed to the wedding which means they might actually progress the character of Batman forward beyond his now well-known place?

What am I to do? These comics get on my nerves. But I still love them. So overall, a lot of good stuff is coming, but also cheap, gimmicky cash grabs which fill the industry with oversaturation and customer deprivation. Let’s hope things get better.
